Chris Wondolowski named MLS Player of the Month for June, second POTM honor of 2012 season

Chris Wondolowski celebrates his game-winner against Real Salt Lake with San Jose Earthquakes head trainer Bruce Morgan.

Chris Wondolowski continues to add to his lead in the race for MLS Most Valuable Player with the announcement of his second MLS Player of the Month award this season. The honor, as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters, follows up his win in April with another selection in June. Wondolowski has won the award tow other times in his career, once in 2010 and once in 2011.

While not surprising given his complete dominance of the MLS Golden Boot race, Wondolowski’s achievement of two awards in a single season put him in a select group of five players that have accomplished the feat in the history of MLS. Juan Pablo Angel in 2007 was the last player to win the double, with Landon Donovan (2003), Carlos Ruiz (2002), and Clint Mathis (2000) rounding out the elite five.

Wondolowski increased his league leading season tally of goals to 14 in June with 3 goals in as many San Jose Earthquakes matches that month. All three of his tallies also proved to be match winners for his team, and helped propel the Earthquakes to a perfect 3-0-0 June record and a place atop the MLS league table. Going into July, Wondolowski and the Earthquakes lead the race for the 2012 Supporters Shield trophy.

Wondolowski’s goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy, the fourth goal for the team that evening in a 4-3 comeback win after trailing 3-1, was nominated for the MLS Goal of the Week.

Wondolowski earned the Earthquakes their first ever victory against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium with another equally acrobatic goal, this time off a flicked on header by Alan Gordon.

Wondolowski's first goal in June was not so much spectacular, a late penalty kick finish against the Colorado Rapids, but it did cap off another improbable comeback for the Earthquakes.
