Wondo Snubbed for Next USMNT World Cup Qualifiers -- Blessing in Disguise?

Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Lisa Erickson ponders the question as to whether or not it is a bad thing that Chris Wondolowski was not selected to the USMNT roster.

The US Men's National Team (USMNT) roster for this week's World Cup Qualifiers against Antigua & Barbuda and Guatemala was released today and it left a lot of people talking about who was omitted and who was included. One of the biggest head scratcher was the fact that MLS leading MVP and Golden Boot front-runner Chris Wondolowski was left off the list.

Per Jurgen Klinsmann, the decision to leave Chris Wondolowski off the roster was a tactical one; San Jose Earthquakes teammate Alan Gordon and Seattle Sounder's Eddie Johnson "are much better in the air". However, Klinsmann did tell Wondolowski to keep ready and be prepared for a potential call-up in case one of the forwards is injured in Miami at the USMNT camp.

This could be a good thing for Chris Wondolowski to give him time to rest before continuing on his quest to beat Roy Lassiter's single-season goal record of 27. Wondo is currently sitting on 25 goals after last Saturday's hat trick against the Colorado Rapids. His 24th goal tied him with Ronald Cerritos as the Quakes most prolific goal scorer ever; while the 25th goal propelled him past.

Now all that is left is to see if Wondo decides to use this snub to prove to Klinsmann via thrashing LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers that Jurgen made a big mistake leaving the three year goal scoring leader off the US National team.
